What to Eat in Plomari

A good meal in Plomari does not need a complicated order. Ask what has been prepared today, choose a few plates for the middle of the table and leave room for something you had not planned. Meze may accompany ouzo, but shared with friends it can become the entire meal.

Fish and seafood

Sea-facing tavernas may offer fish, octopus, squid, salted fish, shellfish and other seafood meze according to supply and season.

Look for grilled or salted sardines—papalina when available—along with cuttlefish, octopus and the day’s local fish. Ask about origin, price and preparation before ordering by weight.

Local meat

Lesvos is large enough to support meaningful local livestock production. Depending on the restaurant, you may find lamb or mutton, goat, beef, pork and chicken. Ask whether the meat is from the island rather than assuming every menu item is local.

Meze from the land

Add olives, Lesvos cheese, vegetables, pulses, stuffed courgette flowers when in season and dishes cooked in olive oil. Ladotyri Mytilinis and other island cheeses are worth trying, especially when the restaurant can tell you who produced them.

Breakfast, sweets and small purchases

Start at a bakery for bread, cheese pie or spinach pie. Local shops stock honey, spoon sweets, rusks and other Lesvos products that travel easily.

How to choose a place

  • Read the menu and prices before sitting down.
  • Reserve during busy summer evenings when needed.
  • Do not judge only by the view; cooking and ingredient origin matter more.
  • Outside summer, confirm which businesses are open.
